Surya (Rajinikanth), is the abandoned child of a 14 year old unwed mother Kalyani (Srividya), is brought up by a generous lady living in slums. He grows into a fearless kind-hearted slum king who fights the injustice that takes place in town. These qualities lead him to cross swords with the local smuggler Devarajan (Mammootty). Devarajan's friend is beaten up terminally by Surya, and Deva threatens Surya that Surya will find himself in a dangerous situation if Deva's friend was laid to rest. Soon as his friend passes away, Surya then gets placed in prison. However, when Deva discovers Ramana's offense, he decides to get Surya released from jail. Surya himself is surprised to see Deva get him out from jail, and there he tells him nyayamnu onnu irrukku (there is such a thing as justice). And from that glorious moment, Deva surrenders his ego and offers his hand of friendship. Surya too declares that he will be Deva's best friend till death. Deva makes Surya his commander "Thalapathi". Both of them rule the town not only with their muscle but also with their sense of justice. But in the eyes of the Government, they are considered as antisocial elements. Arjun (Arvind Swamy), posted as the new District Collector, plans to arrest both Deva and Surya, so that he could put an end to their brutal activities. But his opportunity all goes in vain. In the ensuing struggle between the Collector and Deva/Surya, Surya learns that Arjun's mother is his mother too. Surya promises his mother that he will not harm Arjun but refuses to leave Deva, whose friendship is more valuable to him than his relationship with his brother. Deva is stunned to learn that Collector and Surya are brothers and admires Surya for not parting with him in spite of discovering his identity. During the process of surrendering to the Collector, assuring him completely stopping their activities, Deva is shot. Surya, in a fit of rage, kills the person who was the cause for Deva's death and surrenders to the Police after performing the final rites of his close associate. The movie is not a typical masala Tamil movie with women falling for the protagonist for his heroism. The reason behind each woman's desire is very rationally explained.

Mammootty gives a splendid performance. He acted well as loving father, a successful hotelier, a respectable citizen, an earnest lover and an understanding person. Geetha, Madhubala and Banupriya have played their roles excellently. Geetha as the Professor, Madhubala as the chirpy teenager are apt for their roles. Bhanupriya as the Dancer who is dedicated to her art gives a good performance with some great dance sequences. The song "Kozhi koovum" exploits her skill to the fullest. Each and every character has a touch of humour blended into it, while Suresh Chakkravarthy's character embodies humour.

The film is a good example for cinema that is not very serious but at the same time does not bore or irritate you with senseless twists and turns. The scenes where Mammootty interacts with his children are a delight to watch and hats off to the director for giving a great family story. It was a good hit movie from Mammootty in 1991.

Kottayam Kunjachan

Kottayam Kunjachan is one of the greatest entertainment movies of Mammootty directed by T.S Suresh Babu and released in March, 1990. The film completed its shooting in 30 days.

Mammootty has shown the class and skill which proves why he is considered one of the best actors of all time. Story is about a Kedi; Kottayam Kunjachan is a small time thug who is just out of jail. He is made to leave the Kottayam district by the local theologian and go to a place where his 'wild acts' are not heard. But he soon gets into trouble with a group of workers which makes him instantaneously famous. He gets to stay with a local devout played by Innocent who lives with his wife, played by K.P.S.C Lalitha, and two children, one of them played by Ranjini. He is tricked into doing things by Ranjini under the false pretension that she loves him. What happens next when he finds that she was using him is the base of the story. The story has very gripping subplots which thickens the main plots. The connection between parts of the film are very nicely handled which makes it a fast paced movie. Mammootty’s thrilling dialogues and fights between Uppukandam Brothers got big clap in theatres. Sukumaran’s acting and dialogues also attractive in this movie.

The attraction of the movie is Mammootty who plays Kottayam Kunjachan. He has taken a Kottayam accent and has delivered his dialogs with great panache. Mammootty's presentation of humor is just great in this movie. Like 1989, 1990 was also good year for Mammootty. He has big hits like Samrajyam, Kalikkalam, Iyer the Great, No: 20 Madras Mail (acted as Mammootty).

Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha

Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha (1989) is a Malayalam feature film directed by T. Hariharan. The screenplay of this film was written by M. T. Vasudevan Nair. The film is based on a legend about the famous warriors of Northern Kerala. According to the legend, Aromal Chekavar, a well-known warrior, lost his life after a duel in which his sword broke off at the hilt during the fight. The metal rivets holding the blade to the hilt had been replaced with wooden ones by his trusted ally and cousin, Chandu. Chandu is said to have betrayed his cousin because he was jealous of Aaromal's popularity and abilities.

MT Vasudevan Nair has worked wonders with the script and dialogues. It can be said that he successfully re-wrote history by turning "Chadiyan Chandu" of kerala folklore into a modern day hero. The portayal of Chandu by Mammootty was so complete that, it’s his face that comes to mind whenever one reads about this historical character in story books or academic texts. Captain Raju too, arguably played the role of his life as "Aringodar". The Kalari Payat scenes have been beautifully picturised and appear very realistic. And of course the two songs by Yesudas have become perennial favorites.

In Oru Vadakkan Veeragadha, the director and writer used a more natural tone. M.T. Vasudevan Nair won the National Film Award for Best Screenplay. Mammootty received a National Film Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Chandu. Generally, his portrayal of Chandu is counted among the best portrayal of any character in Indian Cinema. P. Krishna Moorthy, the Art Director, also earned the National Film Award for Best Art Direction. Mammootty's performance in Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha along with Mathilukal directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan was also considered for the award. He also got state award for performances in various movies along with this movie.

A truly magnificent performance from Mammootty created a huge fan base and first fans association created in the name of mammootty in the history of Malayalam cinema. It shows that Mammootty is the only mega star for masses and classes in kerala at that time. He is the only Super Star in Malayalam to receive the National Award (Bharath Award) for the first time in the history of Malayalam cinema.

Oru Vadakkan Veeragadha was the biggest hit of 1989 and grossed crores of INR in kerala Box office and ran more than 200 days in major centers. It ran more than 200 days in Calicut (Sangam), Ernakulam (Saritha) and 150 days in Trivandrum (kripa).

Nair Saab

Nair Saab' is arguably, the best army movie released in India which is directed by Joshy and released in 1989. Mammootty, as Nair Saab gives a knock out performance. The audience loved the character so much that he was forced to do more army characters in his illustrious career. It was picturized in the stunningly beautiful Kashmir, exploiting both the summer as well as winter seasons.

The movie starts with a new batch of trainees arriving at the army training center (SAT) situated near border. Their trainer is Nair Saab, a man known for his hard-and-fast training strategies. The first half of the movie is a bit lighthearted and is treated with humor arising from the intense training of the guys. But, things take a U-turn once when the underworld buys out two guys from the batch and use them for importing drugs from the neighboring country. In the turn of events one trainee gets killed by the hands of underworld, while the blame falls on the trainer, Nair Saab. Everybody turns against Nair and he has to flee, only to come back later. The second half takes us to the winter time in Kashmir, which is an exquisite treat for the eyes. The plot thickens as well with the arrival of new trainer for SAT and the attempt to sell the ammunitions stored there, which is worth millions, to the enemy state. Nair Saab intervenes at the right time and with the help of his students, spoils all the evil plans of the traitors.

In the latter half, the movie keeps a very serious tone and is complemented by wonderful climax action sequences. Other actors too, gave impressive performances, Mukesh being the pick of the lot. The direction, photography, art direction, and background score has been fantastic. To put it simply, the movie was well ahead of its time and is regarded as a cult classic today. To think that this movie was made in the eighties and moreover in a shoe-string budget (compared to the Bollywood and other 'woods in India) is just incredible!

1989 is the lucky year for Mega Star Mammootty he ruled the box office entire year than other stars and created box office history through biggest hits such as Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha, Nair Saab, Artham, Mrigaya, Mahayanam and Jagratha.
